Additional Home Insurance Information
The majority of Home Insurance plans available to buyers these days are typically split into two separate categories; Buildings Insurance and Contents Insurance, which, in a nutshell, provide cover for the exterior and structural integrity of your house, and items contained within respectively. Although separate cover plans, both Buildings and Contents Insurance policies are usually available to purchase together as one whole comprehensive Home Insurance plan.
Whilst providing cover for the bare bones of your house - brickwork, tiling, guttering, etc - Buildings Insurance plans also provide cover for permanent fittings such as sinks, showers, toilets, fitted kitchens and permanent fixtures. A 'permanent fixture' refers to anything that cannot be removed from the property without altering the physical structure of the house in any way. Exterior features such as fences and walls are usually included under Buildings Insurance, with optional levels of cover sometimes extending to include sheds and garages. As water pipes represent huge potential damage to a house - soaked floorboards, carpets, masonry and wiring - permanent features such as baths, sinks and showers are covered under Buildings Insurance.
Some mortgage providers may offer buildings insurance along with your mortgage, which could see you qualifying for special discounts, or reduced repayments. This is for reasons of security, as the house is considered to be an investment on the lender's part as well as yours, and so it is in everybody's interest to make sure that the property is protected.
Although mortgage lenders don't look upon Contents Insurance in the same way, it is equally important to consider safeguarding your worldly possessions. Though Buildings Insurance will provide cover in the event of a burst pipe ruining your carpet and requiring a new shower to be installed, you will not be covered for any damage the leaking water will do to any appliances such as a TV or fridge freezer - this is what Contents Insurance is for.
Contents Insurance plans can be tailored to include the basic household essentials such as ovens, microwaves and cover for any food lost as a result of a broken refrigerator, and can be even extended to include cover for multiple items such as CD and DVD collections up to a certain number.
Recent popular additions to Contents Insurance plans include cover for laptops and computers, along with cover plans for any audio files purchased online from iTunes, Nokia Music Store, or Napster that are lost as a result of your computer being stolen or damaged.
This kind of policy is advisable for both homeowners and tenants - although Contents Insurance policies can be limited if the property is let unfurnished or part furnished. Cover for gardening equipment and expensive plants are also increasing in popularity – you can name your garden as another 'room' under a contents insurance policy.
A Contents Insurance policy can also include cover for some items you take away from the home such as bicycles, prams, mobile phones, jewellery and handbag contents – this is known as 'all risks cover', and is a popular addition to Contents Insurance plans.
