Car Insurance
As it is a legal requirement to have some form of insurance for any vehicle you drive, car insurance is an extremely competitive area, with many companies offering a range of different features. As car insurance policies differ from one company to the next, it is not always easy or prudent to compare providers purely on a pound for pound basis – one insurer may provide a deal that is more expensive than the competition but is ultimately more suitable for you and therefore better value for money.
There are many different types of insurance available, tailored for young drivers and students, short term insurance for new purchases and courtesy cars, third party insurance to cover insurance to cover against theft and fire damage, and fully comprehensive insurance covering everything.
More experienced drivers can take advantage of the many no-claims discount schemes on offer from various insurers – these will see monthly costs of insurance decrease each year.
Car Insurance can often be combined with breakdown cover and roadside assistance for a fully comprehensive car insurance package. For those taking their car on holiday, some insurers provide cover for trips abroad, or the option to purchase additional cover or combine an existing plan with a separate travel insurance policy.
Home Insurance
Home insurance is generally divided into two categories, Building Insurance, which covers any damage sustained by the structural make up of the property itself, and Home Contents Insurance, which provides cover for most main household items. It is typically a requirement to apply for Building Insurance if your property is being used as collateral for a mortgage or personal loan.
Contents Insurance provides cover for the majority of household items such as white goods (fridges, freezers, washing machines etc) and desirable electronic goods such as widescreen TVs, DVD players, audio equipment and sound systems as well as computer equipment. Recently, insurers have extended contents insurance policies to cover less traditional items such as musical instruments and amplifiers, and any audio files that have been lost, so music that you have paid for online can be retrieved under the right Contents Insurance plan. Some insurers offer Home Contents insurance plans targeted at specific groups such as students living in rented accommodation, as the Building Insurance should be covered by the owner of the property.
With both types of Home Insurance, cover is usually provided against damage caused in the event of a fire, damage caused by adverse weather, including lightning, strong winds and flooding, leaking water pipes, landslips, theft and vandalism. Most insurers will offer customers the opportunity to combine both Buildings and Contents insurance under a single all-encompassing plan, which usually allows customers to qualify for a discount off of the combined price.
Pet Insurance
Our pets are important parts of our lives, and are considered by owners to be part of the family. The cost of increasing veterinary bills should be less of a worry should something happen. There are many companies providing pet insurance who work closely with animal charities and vets to ensure that your pet's needs are well looked after. There are a number of different types of pet insurance available, ranging from limited-time insurance plans, to lifetime cover insurance, which both provide cover for any treatment of illnesses or injuries, vaccinations, and general long-term healthcare plans that provide cover for the duration of the term.
If your pet goes missing, you may want to offer a reward for its safe return, and if you are hospitalised, you may be able to use your insurance to pay for any kennel/boarding fees if you need someone to look after your pet – pet insurance can help pay for unforeseeable instances like these. Pet insurance also provides financial cover against any accidents involving other people or other people's property. Certain exotic pets which may need to be kept in a temperature controlled environment will have to be covered by a specific type of insurance, especially if they are dangerous to people in any way.
Health Insurance
Health insurance is for those who wish to provide financial cover for their families and to make sure that their property remains within the hands of their partners and/or children. There are two types of life insurance available; term life insurance and investment type life insurance. Term life insurance is called so, because it provides cover for a number of years which you can set yourself, providing cover until at time at which your dependents are in a financially able position. Investment type life insurance is generally more expensive, as it provides a pay out at the end of the term regardless. It is therefore more expensive than term life insurance which is a protection only type of insurance policy.
Term life insurance policies provide peace of mind that should something happen to the insured, his or her dependents will benefit by way of a cash payment. Term life insurance can also be tethered to your mortgage, a policy which ensures the security of your estate and that your partner and/or children are not left without a home.
